Brooklyn Mermaid Parade The Coney Island Mermaid Parade is a celebration of fantasy and free spirit, a glittering carnival where reality and fantasy merge into a magical vortex. This fairytale celebration annually lights up Brooklyn, Brighton and New York City, marking the unofficial start of summer and awakening the city from its spring slumber. On Saturday, June 21, a sparkling river of fantasy flowed along Surf Avenue and the golden edge of the waterfront - here was the 43rd triumphant parade, a celebration of sea dreams and unbridled creativity. Mermaids of all genders, ages, and races marched through the streets and along the ocean, and alongside them was a fantastic army of sea creatures: rainbow fish, majestic crabs, emerald squids, scarlet lobsters, octopuses, and dancing sea creatures. All this turns the city and the neighborhood where I live and work into a living sea legend. And amid this splendor, an old, bitter question arises: how is it that, living on the shores of a generous ocean, we feed New Yorkers fish from distant China? So, the mermaid parade is not just a procession, it is an exciting hymn to sea mythology, a grand art parade where the elements of unrestrained fantasy reign and the spirit of creative freedom triumphs. Here, both participants and spectators seem to weave a necklace of glittering jewelry, shining smiles, airy tulle, intricate crowns, shimmering patches, elegant shells, rainbow body art, mother-of-pearl beads, fringe trains and often - almost complete or partial nudity before the elements. And many, including me, like it, because we live in a great city! At the head of this multifaceted procession walked a charismatic handsome man in the image of the formidable Neptune and a dazzling beauty - the Mermaid Queen, as if descended from the pages of ancient legends. Nearby were heard the fearless voices of "No Kings", fiery drummers, a whirlwind of dancers, the tireless Coney Island Polar Bear Club and the legendary "mayor" of Coney Island. Among this sea of faces - both heroes in dazzling costumes and those who proudly bared their bodies to the sun and sea breeze. And as always, the valiant New York police invisibly but reliably protected the holiday, and the mounted officers on their majestic steeds seemed to have stepped out of old paintings. Of course, a beautiful addition to the parade was the fabulous procession of magnificent retro cars, shining silver and chrome in the sun's rays. And many are already looking forward to when, again, but next year, they will become part of this amazing sea fairy tale, attracting to New York not only city residents, but also admiring guests from all over the world. My husband was bewitched by a friend from work... It wasn’t funny to me! He rushed about and went to her, and I found out everything... but when I gave her an ultimatum, he chose her! What was I like then... our child was one and a half years old at that time... I was thinking about what to do and a friend advised me to look for people with abilities. I called many people, but the fortune telling and analyzes were unconvincing. But that’s exactly how I found the magician Andrey. He only asked for a photo and nothing more. How impressed I was when he began to say something that no one could help but know. I got goosebumps. It turned out that my husband had a love spell on him. Life is divided into before and after. I asked for help to remove this. Andrei set a deadline of two weeks (give or take) and began work... but this was of course easier, since I saw Andrei’s abilities, which gave me confidence. In her work, Andrei turned out to be a very pleasant and polite person (in my understanding, fortune tellers and magicians were different). And, my happiness, my husband is back! I won’t tell you all the walks and apologies... but the result is the same - we were able to survive it. Of course, thank you very much Andrey! Silk Road Festival in New York - a triumph of culture and unity For several years now, like many others, I have been looking forward to the Silk Road Festival with particular anticipation. It is organized by a tireless, bright female leader, an outstanding teacher, Alena Badalova, who heads the My Way children's cultural and educational center. This is not just an event - it is a real spiritual holiday that promotes mutual enrichment, spiritual unity and reveals the dazzling palette of cultures of our multinational New York - a beacon of multiculturalism and creativity. The festival reflects the essence of My Way Center's mission - to provide an opportunity for self-expression, creativity, intercultural dialogue - and is a beacon of humanism, respect and cooperation. Despite the serious challenges that preceded the festival, it still took place with triumph. Several months before the event, a building next to the center caught fire, classes were cancelled, and one of the invited groups from California got into a car accident and ended up in the hospital. However, having overcome all the difficulties, the artists took to the stage and amazed the audience with their heartfelt number dedicated to Azerbaijan, causing a storm of applause at the Oceana Theatre. And against all odds, on June 1, 2025, Center My Way organized a grand festival "Silk Road", which became a real ode to the historical and cultural greatness of the ancient trade route that connected East and West, and the route served for centuries for exchange - not only of goods, but also of ideas, art, beliefs, philosophy. An impressive mosaic of national cultures unfolded on the theater stage. Cultural gems from countries such as Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kalmykia, Buryatia, India, Mongolia, Turkey and others were presented - all those whose history is intertwined with the history of the legendary Silk Road. Showing mutual respect and pride in their heritage, the festival encourages the younger generation to explore the world through the lens of art, history and universal human values. I would like to express special gratitude to the director Alena Badalova and the art director, the famous artist and sculptor Emin Guliyev. Their inexhaustible energy, professionalism and love for children fill this project with life. The creativity and success of the students of Emin Guliyev's art studio have been followed with admiration on social networks for many years. Together with dedicated employees, volunteers and leaders of musical and dance groups, they created a truly magical atmosphere, giving children a chance to perform on the professional stage of the American theater Oceana. I would also like to mention many other leaders of musical groups. These are professional dancers, ballerinas and just beauties, for example, Irina, the head of Irina Dancing Studia and others, from whom it was impossible to take your eyes off. And the way the children performed, there are simply no words! And can you imagine what it is like to bring dozens of child dancers on stage who danced together with professionals? Many children have grown up before my eyes, and I rejoice in their successes as in the victories of my child. I often see the performance of children from the My Way center at various events in the city, and this is always the highlight of the event. And it is not surprising that the efforts of Alena Badalova and the center's staff were recognized with honorary certificates and gratitude from public and political figures: from Assemblymen William Colton, Alec Brooke-Krasny, Senator Stephen Chen, which was presented by the Senator's chief adviser Ari Kagan, on behalf of the Mayor of New York Eric L. Adams, which was presented by the Assistant Commissioner for the Department of Arts and Culture of New York Kendal Henry, and from other government representatives who honored the organizers for their contribution to the development of culture and the education of the younger generation - and, believe me, each certificate is recognition of service to people. Also, the famous lawyer Eva Rakhamimova was awarded an honorary certificate for charitable activities, and it is worth noting that many city events took place thanks to her support. In an interview, Alena Badalova said: “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the New York City Department of Cultural Afairs in partnership with the City Council, the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and New York State Legislature, New York City Mayor Eric L. Adams, The State Committee on Work with Diaspora of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan to the United Nations, Diana Bagrationi Foundation, Buryad Mongol United Association, Darina Sanzhieva, Law Office of Yeva Rakhamimov and Oceana Theater. It is their generous support and grant that have made this event possible, enabling us to continue this cherished tradition." Marina Lagunova
THE BRAINCHILD OF YAKOV FRIEDMAN AND THE RABBAYEV OKUNEVS
THE BRAINCHILD OF YAKOV FRIEDMAN AND THE RABBAYEV OKUNEVS
It has been over 50 years since the Lubavitcher Rebbe proposed, and with God's help, oh miracle, the Minors are lit in the streets and squares. The Russian-speaking Jewish community living on West 5 and Brighton is pleased to welcome the organizers of the ceremonial lighting of the Chanukiah, Rabbai 1'ersh Okunev and his nephew Rabbai David Okunev. The Okunev family of religious leaders does a lot of good to ensure that Jewish life continues on West 5. Ari Kagan, a worthy politician, spoke and congratulated everyone present on the holiday. More than 40 years ago we started lighting the Minorah on Brighton, and our nine-meter beauty Minorah - a symbol of the Victory of Light over darkness - is already more than 25 years old. This is the only non-detachable, permanently installed Minorah in the USA, near the Chase Bank it was made by the talented architect Jacob Friedman. And yesterday another creation of Jacob Friedman appeared - the second Chanukiah on 4 Brighton, near the Western Wall. He is an immigrant from Odessa, a Holocaust survivor. For over 25 years, he has been volunteering to equip synagogues with technical equipment. For example, he made the largest Sukkah for the Sukkot holiday in the synagogue, without a single nail. He also writes beautiful poetry. Yes, the Jewish people give birth to such talented people!
During the lighting of Minora, dozens of Jews and non-Jews with their children and grandchildren have been coming to Minora for many years to hear music and try doughnuts. It is worth noting that the Rabbai are treated with great respect in the area. They can support in difficult times, rejoice in successes, are happy when they get married, get married, and have children.
The holiday of light and fires has arrived, designed to give a miracle and warm the hearts of believers. The day when hundreds of candles are lit and the Jewish people pay tribute to the events that happened many centuries ago. In the evenings, the lights lit on many windowsills in New York remind us: no matter how dark and scary it is around, there will always be that one treasured jug, a clean vessel with oil. And a miracle will happen and bring warmth and kindness to the world.
Let the holiday of light and goodness bring light, love and warmth into your hearts.
