The price of politics and a test of strength
The price of politics and a test of strength
Politics isn't just about grandiose statements, campaign promises, and pretty photos. True politics begins when you have to make difficult decisions, take responsibility, and weather the storms of fate.
There's a moment that separates a true leader from a random person in power. This is the moment when the system turns against the movement, when you have to defend not only your convictions but also your own name. Alec Brook-Krasny was never a "convenient" politician. He couldn't remain silent when he needed to speak up, and he didn't limit himself to formal meetings and reports. He helped where others shrugged their shoulders. He achieved solutions that seemed impossible. He championed the interests of those who preferred to be ignored. But there are achievements that many have already forgotten. Today, oceanfront apartments in the neighborhoods along Surf Avenue are considered desirable places to live. Yet, at one time, many people were afraid to go outside here and even refused offers of housing. Alec Brook-Krasny's work in fostering mutual understanding between the Russian-speaking and African-American communities played a huge role in changing this situation. He held meetings, explained the nuances of different cultures, sought common ground, and helped people hear each other. This dialogue proved successful and produced tangible results. Alec Brook-Krasny didn't pretend the problems didn't exist. He explained the specifics of the Russian-speaking community to the authorities and the police, helped foster dialogue between people of different cultures, and ensured that more Russian-speaking police officers were deployed in the area. His goal was simple and clear: for people to feel safe and be able to live in peace and mutual respect. This wasn't "beautiful politics." It was everyday work.
However, such work has its price. Politics often tests families, too. At one point, Alec was forced to leave politics to salvage what was left. But the trials didn't end there. Loud accusations, public pressure, and attempts to force him into a convenient narrative followed. But that's not the most important thing. What matters is that not everyone returns after such trials. He did. Politics is no place for experimentation, especially in difficult times. Therefore, choosing a voter isn't just a matter of personal preference. It's a matter of experience, character, resilience, and the ability to withstand the blows of fate. Alec Brook-Krasny passed his own test of endurance over many years of public activity and political work.
I've seen him personally call people on numerous occasions, sort out difficult situations, contact various organizations, and assist those who turned to him for support. This winter, he worked virtually around the clock to restore heating in residential buildings, calling the relevant services and overseeing the resolution of problems.
I was told the story of a teenager who lost his parents in a car accident. Thanks to Alec Brook-Krasny's help, the boy was able to join his relatives in New York, obtain the necessary documents and education, and went on to make a huge difference to our country. There are many such stories.
In one case, a 15-year-old boy was being bullied by another student. The student not only insulted him at school but also stalked him on TikTok and social media. The conflict ultimately culminated in a brutal attack: the victim was beaten with brass knuckles and subsequently required five stitches in his face.
When police arrived on the scene, the incident was effectively dismissed as a routine teenage fight. No serious action was taken.
The harassment continued until they turned to Alec Brooke-Krasny for help. It was only thanks to Assemblyman Alec Brooke-Krasny's intervention that the case went to court. Following the trial, the harassment of the teenager ceased.
This story should serve as a lesson to anyone who considers it acceptable to bully, intimidate, or use violence at school. Such actions will sooner or later be held accountable under the law.
Thank you to those who are willing to call, listen, help, and achieve a solution, who don't forget about people even when it requires time, effort, and personal sacrifice. Thank you to those politicians for whom serving society remains not just a slogan, but a lifelong commitment.
