MAYBE IT'S NOT AGE
Life in all its forms and aspects depends on an uninterrupted and constant supply of food. Just as rivers and canals irrigate fields and gardens, so too do the vessels of our circulatory system continually deliver the essential elements of existence to every cell of our body. Just as soil suffers from drought and withers without adequate irrigation, so too does the human body tire and age when circulation is impaired.
Dr. Lev Khitin, a board-certified cardiovascular, thoracic, and general surgeon, a member of the American Academy of Vascular Surgery, and founder and president of the New York City Vein Institute, shares his thoughts on the symptoms of poor circulation and the steps to take if these symptoms occur.
It all starts with the feet
Circulation problems often begin in the legs, likely because our leg muscles are the most overworked in our lives. Interestingly, since the legs are positioned vertically beneath the heart, a disruption in the return of used venous blood from the legs back to the heart, against gravity, is the most common blood supply problem not only to the legs but to the entire body. This condition is called "venous insufficiency" and initially manifests as a feeling of heaviness and fatigue in the legs. This is due to the fact that the affected veins are unable to resist gravity and, as a result, do not lift used venous blood from the legs back to the heart, but instead allow it to flow freely back down. Leg tissues then become poisoned by the waste products and waste products brought by this blood.
Listen to your body
Many people mistakenly believe that varicose veins are the only manifestation of venous problems. While varicose veins are certainly one symptom of these conditions, they are far from the only one. Venous insufficiency manifests itself in various leg discomforts: legs ache, feel "wobbly," go numb, burn, and, of course, get tired. This is precisely how many of my patients describe their sensations. The disease progresses differently for everyone: leg cramps, especially at night, swelling and occasional redness, followed by infections, heaviness, and fatigue in the legs—all these are signs of venous insufficiency. In short, if you have difficulty walking and standing, the likelihood is that the culprit is not age, as is commonly believed, but venous circulation.
What to do?
At my clinic, VEiN (Vascular & Endovascular Institute of New York), we carefully examine and fully evaluate the circulatory system of the lower extremities. Following the diagnostic process, we provide a complete "profile" of the leg's circulatory system, along with treatment recommendations. Treatment, if indicated, can include all the latest therapies: from specialized exercises, ointments, and tablets to laser, thermal, and other procedures. The treatment process, of course, depends on many factors, the most important of which is the stage of the disease: it's natural that complete healing of a chronic trophic ulcer that developed decades ago takes longer than treating early edema or, for example, so-called spider veins.
Self-medication, leeches, evil and good spirits
I'd like to especially note that sometimes I see patients with particularly advanced cases. Almost without exception, these patients admit to self-medicating, citing a lack of trust in doctors. I've seen many results from various "shamanic" treatments: leeches, poultices, rubs, herbal baths, and so on. The consequence of such an approach is always a much more severe form of the disease, typically complicated by bleeding, thrombosis, phlebitis, and even malignant tumors.
On the other hand, a timely visit to a doctor can quickly and easily restore a person to a full lifestyle. I strongly advise everyone to review the list of venous insufficiency symptoms and, if they occur, not to wait or self-medicate, but to come to my clinic. I will definitely help you. Thank you very much.

Dr. Chitin has offices in Brooklyn at 1513 Voorhies Ave, 2nd Floor and 44 Court Str., Ste #15, as well as 30 Park Avenue in Manhattan.
