Medicaid for undocumented New Yorkers over 65

On April 4, 2024, in honor of National Public Health Week, city and state agencies held a citywide day of action in New York City to encourage undocumented New Yorkers age 65 and older to enroll in the newly expanded Medicaid health plan.

Effective January 1, the Medicaid program was expanded to include undocumented seniors who are income eligible in New York State. Previously, coverage for older undocumented residents was limited to coverage for emergency medical visits. To reach undocumented New Yorkers who may qualify, the New York City Mayor's Office of Community Engagement, NYC Care staff and their partners distributed information in multiple languages to areas of the city with large immigrant populations.
New Yorkers who meet the criteria can connect with the Office of Public Affairs' GetCoveredNYC program or go directly to the New York City Department of Health website to register. Those already enrolled in Emergency Medicaid will be automatically transferred to this expanded coverage and will have the opportunity to choose a new plan. For more information, visit nyc.gov/ExpandedMedicaid.
NYC Health hospitals are committed to reducing barriers to health care by empowering New Yorkers to live the healthiest lives possible. The health system strongly supports coverage for all by expanding Essential Plan eligibility to extend coverage to individuals who are not currently eligible for health insurance due to their immigration status. “Expanding Medicaid to undocumented New Yorkers age 65 and older is a critical step forward toward more equitable public health in our city,” said Adrienne Lever, executive director of the Mayor's Office of Public Affairs. “I am proud of the dedicated efforts of our city, state and community partners to ensure that seniors, regardless of their immigration status, receive the care they deserve.” Through the strategic work of Community Engagement, we are breaking down barriers to health and access to insurance for some of New York's most vulnerable residents.”
“Previously, undocumented seniors living in New York were limited to receiving Medicaid only in emergency situations, making it difficult to effectively manage health care for one of our most vulnerable populations,” said Amir Bassiri, New York State Medicaid Director. “This expansion is fundamental to our commitment to addressing health inequities and advancing health equity.”
“Undocumented adults are more likely to work in jobs that do not provide health benefits. They have historically faced restrictions on participation in government programs, forcing them to forgo preventive services and screenings and rely on costly emergency room care as their only option,” said Commissioner of Health Dr. James McDonald. “This expansion of Medicaid eligibility for immigrants in New York is the state's recognition of the importance of health care equity, especially for those age 65 and older. This critical step is consistent with the City's ongoing efforts to create a healthy New York for older adults,” said Department on Aging Commissioner Lorraine Cortez-Vazquez. “The Department of Aging is committed to supporting the state’s efforts to attract, educate and enroll immigrant seniors to access this unique health coverage.”
“As a primary care physician, I am thrilled to support the citywide effort to educate older New Yorkers about Medicaid expansion, providing them with quality, affordable health insurance. Whether someone is managing a chronic illness or getting a routine check-up with a doctor, they will all gain peace of mind knowing that they now have insurance coverage regardless of their income level or immigration status, said Dr. Jonathan Jimenez, MPH , Executive Director of NYC Care at NYC Health+ Hospitals. “I thank our government and community partners, and our network of volunteers, for their commitment to reducing health inequalities and supporting the development of vibrant, healthy communities.”
“Health care is every person's right, and in New York we recognize that everyone deserves access to quality health care, regardless of their immigration status,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Wasan. “I encourage all New Yorkers to take advantage of these benefits and sign up today because there is no path to healthier, longer lives for ALL New Yorkers without access to healthcare.”

Marfa is more than just a fortune teller. She is a conductor of light.

Martha saved me. I don’t know how to find the right words, because everything I went through is impossible to describe simply. It wasn’t pain... it was devastation. As if everything alive had been burned out inside me. My husband left. He just got up and left, as if he had never loved me. He said he stopped loving me. He said he was tired. And I stood rooted to the spot, with a mug in my hand and couldn’t breathe. After that, the days merged into a black shroud. I didn’t eat, I didn’t sleep. I woke up and didn’t want to wake up. The children asked where dad was, but I just remained silent and died even more. Everything we had was gone. He was with another woman. He lived with her. He laughed with her. And it was as if I had died for him. I didn’t believe in anything. Until I accidentally saw a review about Martha. At first, I brushed it off. But then, in some kind of desperate hysteria, I simply wrote to her. And she answered. From the first words, warmth. Calm. She didn't ask stupid questions. She just said... You haven't lost everything yet. But you're on the edge. And she started working. I don't know how, I don't know what exactly she did, but it got easier with each passing day. I started having dreams where he came back. I started feeling like there was something between us again. Three weeks later, he came back. Himself. Without threats, without shouting. He just came. He fell on his knees and begged for forgiveness. He said that something had happened to him, that it was as if he had woken up. He looked into my eyes as if for the first time. I sobbed like a child. Now he is with us again. With the children. With me. We are learning to live again. And if it weren't for Marfa, I wouldn't be writing this letter. I might not have written anything at all... I didn't know what pain was... until he left.

When you've lived with someone for 12 years, shared every day, every trouble - you don't think that one day they'll just leave. Without explanations. Without tears. Just say: "I need to live for myself." I was left alone. With the kids. With his cup, his toothbrush, with an empty chair at dinner. And he was in a new life. With a new woman. I didn't want to live. Really. Only the kids held me. But my heart was dying every day. I found out about Lilia in a chat where women shared stories. Someone wrote: "If no one can help - write to Lilia." I wrote. She answered right away. As if she knew how I cried at night. As if she'd already seen everything. We started. Rituals, spells, cleansings. I didn't understand what I was doing, but I did everything. Two weeks later - a call. Him. His voice was shaking. "I miss you. I realized everything. I lost the most precious thing. I'm a fool." He returned home after 3 days. Now he says that he was in some kind of fog. As if someone took his eyes off his family. Liliya, if it weren't for you, I wouldn't be here anymore. You didn't just help me, you saved me. Thank you. Political Mathematics, Youth Protest, and Our Lessons
No one expected it, but it happened, and starting January 1st, we'll have Zohran Mamdani as our mayor. Just a year ago, even the residents of Queens couldn't have imagined that Zohran Mamdani would soon become mayor of New York City.

Today we are a family. A real one. And this is her great merit.

We turned to Lilya when we had almost decided to break up. We lived close, but were like strangers - each in their own world of pain and grievances. From the very first conversation with Lilya, it became clear: she sees deeper than just words. She felt our pain, our fear, our fatigue. It became easier to breathe with her. It became possible to talk without shouting. She literally lifted the burden from us that we had been dragging for years. Lilya helped bring respect, understanding and warmth back to our home. Today we are a family. A real one. And this is her great merit. Her contacts (+380638055486 - WhatsApp Viaiber; +19297133433 - regular communication)

Review of the fortune telling: everything matched

I'd like to leave a review. Natalia's readings are very accurate; many things came together, which I didn't even expect. She explained my situation exactly as it was and suggested what to do next. I felt much calmer afterward. I'm very grateful to her. Phone: +19297404563
