When should you apply for Medicare?
Answered by Veronika Rowell, founder of West Michigan Mutual LLC DBA Chief Insurance Services, a licensed health insurance broker.
What to do if you're turning 65 soon, have lost your employer insurance, or your plan no longer covers the drugs and doctors you need.
Medicare is a government health insurance program in the United States.
Veronika Rowell: Chief Insurance Services helps Russian-speaking residents of the United States understand all the details of Medicare and choose the best plan based on the necessary medications, doctors, and budget. After all, in some situations it is easy to make a mistake and overpay or be left without the necessary coverage.
When can I apply?
Medicare?
Three months before your 65th birthday. If you are first eligible for Medicare, you can apply three months before your birth month, during your birth month, and three months after. This is called the Initial Enrollment Period. But it is best not to wait until the last minute to avoid missing your coverage start date and penalties.
If you're over 65 and had insurance through an employer (or through a spouse), you can enroll in Medicare when your group coverage ends. You have a 2-month Special Enrollment Period to choose Medicare Advantage or Part D (a drug plan) without penalty or having to wait until the fall. You can also enroll in Medigap if you're planning on original Medicare.
Certain life changes—moving, losing Medicaid, etc.—are also called special enrollment periods. You may be eligible to change your Medicare plan or enroll if:
- moved to another state or county where different plans are in effect;
- lost Medicaid or other benefits (such as extra help);
- you have been discharged from a long-term care facility;
- got out of prison;
- the insurance company has ceased operations in your region.
Each situation has its own timeframe, and it is important not to miss the time and the specific period for registration. Therefore, we recommend consulting with a licensed agent.
