Improving the New York City subway experience
Improved subway service in New York City—more trains and better service—is a boon for New Yorkers and visitors to the capital of the world.
At a press conference that took place right at the entrance to the subway on Surf Avenue, the head of the New York MTA and department directors on July 2, in the presence of the press, announced that service would be improved for passengers who use the subway on lines B, D, J, M, 3 and 5. This is especially important now that the beaches are open, schools are on holiday and the weather is very hot. "All we're thinking about is how to improve the passenger experience, so we thought it was important to get out here and talk to passengers and learn how they get to their destinations," MTA officials said.
Service on the B, D, J, M, 3 and 5 trains will be improved during the midday and evening hours on weekdays. Passengers will see trains arriving every 8 minutes during the midday and evening periods. From Saturday 6 July, lines 3 and 5 will have improved weekend service, with trains arriving every 10 minutes.
During the pandemic, public transportation suffered heavy losses as many stopped using its services due to COVID-19, rats, homeless people and crime. As service was being cut across the country, Gov. Kathy Hochul fought to save the MTA and expand subway service. “These improvements have brought more riders back to the subway and provided more affordable and reliable transportation for New Yorkers,” MTA officials said.
In addition to improving service, the MTA is expanding the Rockaway Park Shuttle to 10-car trains and extending the shuttle route to Rockaway Blvd on weekends through September 1st. From 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, an expanded shuttle will operate from Rockaway Blvd., allowing beachgoers to transfer to the A train serving the Lefferts Blvd and Far Rockaway lines.
MTA Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber said, "New Yorkers are planning beach days, and public transit is the most affordable travel option." NYC Transit Interim President Demetrius Critchlow added, "Customers say improved service and shorter wait times will bring them back to the subway. We're excited to improve service to ensure riders have a great summer ride on the New York City subway." MTA Chief Customer Officer Shanifa Riara said, "These improvements will benefit riders in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx, especially during school holidays."
These improvements are made possible by $35 million requested by Mayor Eric Adams in New York State's FY 2024 budget to improve subway service. At the press conference, the question was also asked: “Will the metro fare remain $2.90, as it is today, or will it rise in price?” MTA employee Ray Mundy answered the question: “The subway fare will remain $2.90.”
Please note: I use public transport and often meet people who ask where they can top up their travel card. I inform you that I use my phone to pay for travel, and the money is automatically transferred from my account. It is also important to note that if you have a low income, you can get a New York City transit ticket for half the price.
