MAYBE IT'S NOT AGE Life in all its forms and species depends upon an unimpeded and constant supply of food. Just as rivers and canals irrigate fields and gardens, so the vessels of our circulatory system continually deliver the essential elements of existence to every cell of our body. Thus Just as the soil suffers from drought and withers without adequate irrigation, so the human body tires and ages when circulation is impaired. Dr. Lev Khitin, a physician of the highest category in the fields of cardiovascular, thoracic and general surgery, a member of the American Academy of Vascular Surgery, founder and president of the Institute of Vein Treatment of New York City, shares his thoughts on the symptoms of poor circulation and the measures that need to be taken in the presence of these symptoms. IT ALL STARTS WITH THE FEET Circulation problems often begin in the legs, probably because our leg muscles are the most overworked muscles in our lives. It is also interesting that since the legs are located vertically under the heart, the "return" of the used venous blood from the legs back is impaired. towards the heart, against the Earth's gravity, is the most common problem of blood supply not only to the legs, but to our entire body. This disease is called "venous insufficiency" and it initially manifests itself as a feeling of heaviness and fatigue in the legs due to the fact that the affected veins are not able to resist gravity and, as a result, do not lift used venous blood from the legs to the heart, but on the contrary, allow it to flow freely back down. The tissues of the legs are poisoned by the waste and decay products that such blood carries. LISTENTO YOUR BODY Many people mistakenly believe that the only manifestation of venous problems are varicose veins. Of course, varicose veins are one of the symptoms of these diseases, but it is far from the only one. Venous insufficiency manifests itself in various kinds of "inconvenience in the legs": the legs ache, they feel "cottony", go numb, burn and, of course, get tired. This is how many of my patients describe their sensations. Everyone has a different way of developing the disease: leg cramps, especially at night, swelling and periodic redness, followed by infection, heaviness and tired legs - all these are signs of venous insufficiency. In short, if you have difficulty walking and standing, the probability is that the culprit is not age, as is commonly believed, but venous circulation. WHAT TO DO? At my clinic, VEIN (Vascular & Endovascular Institute of New York), we carefully study and fully examine the circulatory system in the lower extremities. As a result, at the end of the diagnostics, a complete "profile" of the blood supply system of the legs is issued with recommendations for treatment. Treatment, if indicated, can include all the most modern types of therapy from special exercises, ointments and tablets to laser, thermal and other procedures. The treatment process , of course, depends on many factors, the most important of which is the stage of the disease: it is quite natural that the complete healing of a chronic trophic ulcer that formed ten years ago takes longer than the treatment of early edema or, for example, the so-called spider veins. SELF-MEDICATION, LEECHES, EVIL AND GOOD SPIRITS I would like to especially note the fact that sometimes I receive patients with a particularly advanced stage of the disease. Almost without exception, patients admit say that they were self-medicating, citing the fact that they do not trust doctors. I have seen many results of various kinds of "shamanic" treatment methods: leeches, lotions, rubs, herbal baths, etc. The consequence of such an approach is Yes, the degree of the disease is always much more severe, usually complicated by bleeding, thrombosis, phlebitis and even malignant neoplasms. On the other hand, a timely visit to a doctor can return a person to a full lifestyle easily and quickly. I strongly advise everyone to re-read the list of symptoms of venous insufficiency and, if they are detected, not to wait and not to treat themselves, but come to my clinic. I will definitely help you Lev Khitin, MD, FACS
