New York Sports Veterans Day

In December 2023, the Sports Veterans Association celebrated its 20th anniversary.

The tireless president, Edward Luchin, enjoys well-deserved authority among politicians of the highest level and ordinary people, whose lives have changed thanks to the popularization of sports and a healthy lifestyle. Many people know the famous sports journalist Edward Luchin. The events of the Sports Veterans Association bring joy and pleasure, they teach, no matter what, including health, to fight and go to victory.
"Through sport - to goodness and peace!" - under this slogan the Association of Sports Veterans has worked for the community all these years. There are many good deeds on the Association's account. These are the Memorials to the famous football players and coaches Valery Lobanovsky and Matvey Cherkassky, the Memorial to the memory of police detective Ruslan Timoshenko, who died heroically while serving in New York, the Memorial against Terror, dedicated to the memory of the victims of the tragedies of September 11, 2001 and September 5, 1972, when Palestinian terrorists killed 11 Israeli athletes at the 20th Olympic Games in Munich (Germany). For many years now, chess players of different ages have been competing for awards at the chess festival “Israeli International Grandmaster Boris Gelfand Cup.”
Anastasia Yaskova, a representative of the office of New York Mayor Eric Adams, read out the greeting from the Mayor of New York to the participants of the Olympic Ball, noting the important work of the Association for the community and the city and presented the Association of Sports Veterans with a letter from the Mayor of New York, which announced that December 21, 2023 year is Veterans Sports Association Day in New York.
Participants in the Olympic Ball were welcomed by politicians, members of the New York State Assembly Alec Brook-Krasny and William Colton, as well as a representative of Mikhail Novakhov’s office, Natalya Mednikova.
The guest of honor at the “Olympic Ball 2023” was two-time Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics 1992 in Barcelona (Spain), multiple world and European champion Tatiana Gutsu, who still passes on her experience to children.
During the performance of People's Artist of Ukraine Georgy Dmitrievich Melsky, dedicated to the war in Ukraine, tears rolled into the eyes of many present.
The screen showed footage of the tragedy on October 7, 2023 in Israel during the barbaric attack by Hamas terrorists and the death of 1,200 Israelis. However, Israel lived, is alive and will live!
The anthems of the USA, Ukraine and Israel were played. Honored Artist of Ukraine Victoria Vennikova performed the song “New York, New York,” and young dancers from the Ukrainian dance ensemble “Youth” performed.
For many years of support for the work of the Association of Veterans of Sports, the title and special award “People of 2023 of the Association of Veterans of Sports” were awarded to doctors Elena Voronova and Michael Patin.
A special award from the Association of Veterans of Sports was presented to the Bridge View Soccer Academy team as the best football school, which was presented to the school leaders Oleg Sarumov and Elshan Gambarov.
For many years of service to sports and the implementation of Olympic ideals, awards were presented to sports veterans. Among them are Honored USSR wrestling coach Yuri Vilensky, renowned tennis coach Arkady Eidelman, boxing coach Michael Kozlowski, Honorary Master of Sports of the USSR in volleyball Felisa Goldguber, Honored Checkers Coach and Chess Coach Mikhail Katz, former President of the Chernomorets football club. (Odessa) Grigory Bibergal, young swimmer Grigory Starikov, football coach Steve Rososky, famous karate coach Vladimir Borodin, European karate champion Anton Levkun. Members of the Association of Sports Veterans Sergey Bulba, Alena Guz, Mark Pecheny, Gennady Golbreich did a lot for the successful holding of the Olympic Ball, for which we are very grateful.
